PR is a risk function before it is a growth function

Coverage is the visible output. The real work is the standing an organization holds with the people who decide its future before anything goes wrong.

Public relations is commonly bought as publicity and quietly needed as insurance. The organizations that manage it well understand which of the two they are actually paying for.

Standing is built in calm weather

Regulators, investors, journalists and major customers form a view of an organization long before an incident. That view determines whether a difficult week is read as an anomaly or a confirmation. It cannot be assembled during the incident itself.

One narrative, many rooms

The story told to the trade press, the story told to the regulator, and the story told internally must be the same story at different resolutions. Divergence between them is the most reliable predictor of a reputational failure that outlives the event that caused it.

Rehearse the three worst days

Name the three scenarios that would most damage the organization, write the holding position for each, and agree who speaks. This exercise takes an afternoon and is the highest-return hour of PR work most executive teams never book.
